General Information

The British Fragrance Association (BFA) is a Trade Association representing the collective interests of the Fragrance Industry in the UK.

Objectives and Structure

The BFA’s primary focus is the development and advancement of the Fragrance Industry. It represents the needs and concerns of the UK fragrance industry within government organisations and provides a forum where industry can decide jointly the best way of dealing with its customers concerns. The BFA has a committee led structure where representatives from each member company meet to debate issues and decide on the strategy of the BFA.

The BFA Technical Committee meets four/five times a year and all Members are eligible to send a representative to this Committee. The meetings give an opportunity to debate current issues, ask questions and form a general consensus upon which an industry position can be agreed. The Executive Committee consists of 12 Full Members elected at the Annual General Meeting who meet regularly to deal with policy issues, strategy and finance.

About Membership

How do Members get involved?

The BFA has a Technical Committee which meets four/five times a year, and all Members are eligible to send a representative to this Committee. The meetings give an opportunity to debate current issues, ask questions and form a general consensus upon which an “industry voice” can be agreed. These meetings also give an opportunity to promote best practice.
An Executive Committee of twelve is elected at the Annual General Meeting to deal with policy matters, finance and steer the work of the Technical Committee and ad hoc working groups.
The BFA also holds ad hoc seminars when appropriate. Subjects in recent years have included “REACH” and health & safety labelling.

Should you be interested in applying for membership of the association, please complete the form, and your application will be presented for endorsement by the BFA Executive Committee at their next meeting. Your membership will become active upon payment of the appropriate subscription.

Full and Associate Membership is open to those involved in the Creation, Manufacture, Sales, Marketing and Distribution of both Fragrance Compounds and Aroma Chemicals. Consultant Membership is open to those people or companies acting as consultants to businesses related to the Fragrance Industry.

Membership Benefits

The BFA is a member of:

The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) http://www.ifraorg.org
The European Flavour and Fragrances Association (EFFA) http://www.effa.be
The confederation of British Industry (CBI) http://www.cbi.org.uk
The Alliance of Industry Associations AIA http://www.aiabusiness.org

Members are able to access either directly or through the BFA the services and information provided by these organisations.

The Fragrance Industry is governed in part by self-regulation under the auspices of the IFRA Standards and Codes of Practice. It is mandatory for all members to comply with these Standards. One of the most commonly cited advantages of the BFA membership is the advance notification that Members receive on changes to the guidelines, through information relayed on the deliberations of the IFRA Scientific Committees.

Co-operation and liaison with government departments is vital to the BFA’s ability to influence both UK and European legislation and ad hoc meetings are held when issues arise, supported by information received from the membership on how issues will affect their companies.
The BFA also has regular communications with other trade associations such as the UK Cleaning Products Association (UKCPI), Cosmetic, Toiletries & Perfumery Association (CTPA) and The British Aerosol Manufacturers Association (BAMA).

Members

The following Members have agreed to the publication of their details on the BFA website so that prospective customers may contact them. Please note that this is a non-exhaustive list of BFA Members. The list may not be used for any other purpose.

Legislation & the Fragrance Industry

The Fragrance industry is self-regulatory and therefore needs a self-policing system that is credible. The BFA work with IFRA and EFFA to ensure this requirement is met, and support companies to consistently and appropriately apply the Codes of Practice.

Other legislation affecting the Fragrance Industry includes legislation on Intellectual Property, Occupational Health & Safety, and REACH amongst others. Owing to the global nature of the Fragrance Industry, the BFA believe it is important to monitor worldwide legislative development in order to ensure consistency. It is important that local legislation does not put the UK fragrance industry at a competitive disadvantage, which in turn causes barriers to trade.
